Aurora, Ill. Main service line replacement project underway

A main service line replacement project serving approximately 15 homes and Holy Angels School is underway in Aurora, Illinois.

A water main replacement project to replace other lead water lines on approximately 15 properties on the west side of Aurora, Illinois is underway.

The project was originally scheduled to start this spring and would replace a six-inch mainline along Lakewood Place with an eight-inch pipeline, reported the Chicago Tribune. The estimated cost of the project is $ 329,988 and will run along the north side of Lincoln Park and go to Holy Angels School on the east end.

City councilors on the infrastructure and technology committee recommended the contract with Mauro Sewer Construction Inc., of Des Plaines, Ill., The Chicago Tribune reported.

Lead service line replacements are being replaced thanks to a collaboration of the owners and the city, according to the site of the city of Aurora. The city is replacing the lead service line from the street to the private property line and the owners are replacing it on their property.

Those using the main must replace their lead service lines that bring water from the main to the customer’s property. The main service line serves approximately 15 homes and the Holy Angels School.

Depending on the city, each replacement typically costs the owner between $ 3,000 and $ 5,000, and the program gives owners four options on how to manage their line, the Chicago Tribune reported. The four options are: sign out and take no action; owners must finance their own replacement; homeowners must pay for the replacement with a 10-year loan from the city at 2% annual interest, with annual installments; or use a city grant to pay for the replacement, which is intended for income-eligible homeowners who must have a child aged 6 or under living in the home.

Alderman Sherman Jenkins, in general, for the city of Aurora, said the tender documents for the project did not make specific provision for minority or female-owned contractors, but that he’s using language that says he’s encouraging these types of entrepreneurs, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Aurora officials also launched a study on availability and disparities as a precursor to developing a program to engage more minority and female entrepreneurs.
