Entrepreneurs furious at Giant Pay failure • The Register

Giant Pay – an umbrella company used by entrepreneurs across the UK – has confirmed that “suspicious activity” on its platform is behind a continuous multi-day outage that has left people s ‘worry about whether they will get paid this month.

In an update on its website today, the firm said: “Upon detection of suspicious activity on our network on September 22, 2021, we immediately assembled a response team including data experts. IT and specialist lawyers, and we are currently working with the highest priority to resolve this issue.

As part of the investigation and as a precaution, we have proactively taken our systems offline and temporarily suspended all services. He also confirmed that he contacted regulatory authorities and assured contractors that they would be paid.

“As an interim measure, and to ensure that payment is made to your account on September 24, we will pay you the same amount that was paid to you last week. This will be paid via Faster Pay and will be in your account. by the end of the day. As soon as possible, we will confirm that your payroll has returned to normal. We understand this is not ideal, but we wanted to make sure you receive payment. “

A number of employees, including tech entrepreneurs, have contacted The register furious at the company’s lack of information and its inability to respond to emails.

Giant Umbrella has been down “since Tuesday and doesn’t pay contractors ‘salaries. No phones, no emails and they don’t respond to webchats,” one said, adding: “It’ luckily the UK government didn’t force most of the contractors into IR35 and need umbrella services. How many contractors have been affected by this and what can they do to get paid? “

Another Reg reader added that the umbrella company had clearly had “some sort of major outage this week that affects a lot of contract IT staff.”

Giant Umbrella is a subsidiary of Giant PLC Group, and says its “long-term clients – since 1992 and ongoing – include Page Group and Barclays Bank.”

A notice on her portal simply reads: “Portal Downtime.” We are experiencing technical difficulties and are working to resolve them as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. “

Angry entrepreneurs have taken to Twitter.

An article by someone on Giant Umbrella’s Trustpilot page this morning indicated that they contacted the CFO through LinkedIn, who claimed they were “working to get everyone paid today and that they will receive communications shortly “.

However, none of this is confirmed as no one from the company responded to requests for information. But what few people know has not been welcomed by entrepreneurs who rely on Giant Pay for their payroll.

One of them wrote on Trustpilot this morning: “What the hell is going on ?? It’s good to say we’ll all get paid online today.

Another said: “Extremely worried. Their portal has been down all week without any communication. The contact number is not working and I was not paid! I was forced to use [an] umbrella service because [of] IR35 and this is a direct consequence. Not good enough. “

A third reports that the organization where they work has more than a hundred subcontractors, lamenting: “We were not paid, without prior notification …”

As spirits bubble, this tweet posted this morning summed up the frustration many felt:

Despite repeated attempts to contact the company, no one from Giant Pay was available for comment at the time of writing. ®
