Phone 13 ask: do people really want Apple’s latest phone?

Apple already has an iPhone 13 supply problem. Could it also be facing a demand problem?

This seems to be the conclusion of a Bloomberg report based on sources from Apple’s supply chain. According to Bloomberg, after cutting production orders for the iPhone 13 for this year due to parts shortages, Apple is now telling component suppliers that demand for the iPhone 13 may also weaken, instead of increasing. once iPhone supplies return to normal levels.

If reports of weakening demand are true, it would defeat expectations for the iPhone 13. After the iPhone 12 posted record sales last year, analysts expected Let the good times continue with Apple’s new phone, powered by more and more customers looking for 5G capable phones. . The Bloomberg article says Apple is still on track to hit the consensus forecast of $ 118 billion in total sales for the holiday quarter, but iPhone 13 sales won’t be as spectacular as expected .

And if so, why has the demand for iPhone 13 declined?

The supply issues that plagued Apple this fall – and which the company warned against in its latest earnings call with Wall Street analysts – could come home. While iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini orders currently ship in a few days, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max face a week or two before it leaves the factory. And that’s actually an improvement over the weather we saw earlier this week.

Prospective iPhone customers, those who have postponed ordering their phones, may consider delays and reconsider purchasing an iPhone in 2021. For some, it might be worth waiting for a new iPhone in 2022. While the iPhone 14 isn’t expected until the fall, a new version of the iPhone SE could ship in the first three months of the year, though rumors about Apple’s plans are correct.

Apple’s supply and demand woes also come at a time when the US economy faces its fair share of challenges, especially in the form of inflation. While the cost of iPhone 13 models has not increased, other prices have increased. And that might make consumers wary of spending anywhere from $ 699 to $ 1,099 on a new phone, even with the discounts Apple offered for trading in your old phone.

At least Apple can take some comfort in the fact that it’s not the phone itself that’s keeping people from buying. All four iPhone 13 models debuted with stellar reviews – we currently rank the iPhone 13 Pro Max as the best phone you can buy.

More importantly, comparisons between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 11 show just how much things have changed over the past two years. With people hanging onto phones longer, an upgrade to iPhone 13 offers some very dramatic improvements over Apple phones released three or four years ago. Another thing to keep in mind: While the iPhone 13’s supply issues are very real, concerns about demand can be overblown. “Individual withdrawals in a complex and diverse supply chain are normal and not a good indicator that demand is low,” warned Avi Greengart, senior analyst at Techsponential, when I asked him about the possibility of ‘weaker-than-expected demand based on the Bloomberg report.

Apple won’t announce its holiday sales results until the end of January, when it will release its results for the first quarter of its 2022 fiscal year. That’s when we’ll find out for sure how successful the iPhone 13 is.
