What is the most recent iPhone? We break it down

Everyone wants the latest iPhone. That’s the only reason Apple releases new models every year – and why new launches leave many unhappy with what until then were great smartphones. The point is, with so many models circulating now, it can be difficult for the more casual phone enthusiast to know which is the latest and the “best” iPhone.

This is where we come in. This article provides information on the latest iPhones, as well as capsule reviews of the latest iPhones that Apple sells through its website. Hope this should keep you up to date with the current state of the iPhone and help you focus on which one is right for you.

The most recent iPhone

The iPhone 12 is the last iPhone available today. Apple officially launched it on October 23, so expect its successor to arrive on a similar date this fall. It was unveiled along with three other models in its series: the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Together, these four models are the last iPhones you can buy right now, with the best hardware, best performance, and best cameras.

These aren’t the only iPhones available, however, and you can still purchase three other very recent models from Apple’s website. These are the following:

iPhone 12

IPhone 12 is the last iPhone available today. As you can probably imagine, it’s also the best iPhone you can get right now – at least when cost is factored into the equation (see the iPhone 12 Pro below if you are ready to spend a little more). It packs the latest Apple hardware, including the A14 Bionic chip, which uses 5nm transistors (smaller than those used before) for lightning-fast performance. It also comes with 64GB of standard internal memory and 4GB of RAM, more than enough to get the most out of the A14.

Its camera offers a notable leap from that of the iPhone 11, its direct precursor. It includes a 12-megapixel wide lens, 12 MP ultra-wide lens, and a range of Apple technologies, such as Smart HDR 3 and Deep Fusion, to ensure crisp, colorful photos, with the right balance of brightness and vibrancy. Its Portrait Mode remains excellent, and it is also capable of taking great photos in low light and at night.

It should also be pointed out that the battery of the iPhone 12 offers a great lifespan. At 2,815mAh, it’s capable of lasting an entire day of fairly heavy use, and Apple’s software optimization allows it to outlast the considerably larger batteries you find on many Android phones. It also charges fairly quickly, with support for 20W fast charging, meaning you can go from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes.

Finally, a big news for the iPhone 12 (and the iPhone 12 series as a whole) is that it is the first Apple smartphone to support 5G. So if you want to connect to a 5G network and enjoy the fastest download speeds, this is really your only option, that is, when it comes to iPhones. Another new, more minor feature is support for MagSafe accessories, such as wireless chargers that attach magnetically to the back of the phone.

iPhone 12 Mini

iPhone 12 Mini

The iPhone 12 Mini is a lower cost – and physically smaller – alternative to the iPhone 12. It is virtually identical to the iPhone 12, with the same camera setup, same internal hardware specs, and same grip. software load. However, where it differs is having a 5.4 inch screen (as opposed to a 6.1 inch screen) and a smaller 2,227mAh battery. It’s also $ 100 cheaper than the iPhone 12, so if you want to save some money and would prefer a smaller phone (and you don’t mind a shorter battery life), this is a great option.

It’s definitely a love letter to the small phones of yore, and with apparently disappointing sales from Apple, this could be your last chance to grab a real little iPhone.

iPhone 12 Pro

MagSafe Charge for iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 Pro is part of the latest iPhone line. It takes the same basic hardware as the iPhone 12 but adds a few improvements, which may or may not justify its $ 200 price hike. These upgrades include a third telephoto lens, which is a nice touch to have but arguably not essential. They also include a LiDAR sensor, which improves portraits by detecting depth and perspective more effectively than a regular camera lens. Another addition is support for Dolby Vision HDR video recording, which admittedly makes movie footage look great, but the resulting clips are only viewable on compatible TVs connected to Apple TV (and some Macs).

Besides having 128 GB of internal memory as standard and 6 GB of RAM, these are really the only significant differences between the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12. So if they don’t seem that important to you, you you might prefer to spend $ 200 less and go for the iPhone 12.

iPhone 12 Pro Max

You can think of the iPhone 12 Pro Max to be pretty much the same as the iPhone 12 Pro except for a few key discrepancies. Most obvious is the much larger 6.7-inch OLED Super Retina display, which is even more impressive than the 6.1-inch display on the iPhone 12 Pro. Another big difference is the 3,687mAh battery, large enough to last a full day of demanding use with much of the power remaining in the tank. That’s about it, although you might want to keep its extreme size in mind. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is significantly bigger than the iPhone 12 Pro, which can be obvious given that it needs to contain a bigger screen and a bigger battery. But it’s so big, in fact, that some people with smaller hands may find it uncomfortable to use for long periods of time. Still, it’s a gorgeous phone and arguably justifies its price tag of $ 1,099. It’s the biggest and most powerful iPhone available today and the iPhone to grab if you want a giant screen on your iPhone.

iPhone SE (2020)

iPhone SE 2020 Red Back
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The iPhone SE is one of the latest iPhones, and at $ 399 it’s a fantastic option if you want a high-performance iPhone at a low price. It combines the smaller frame of an iPhone 8 with the same internal processor as the iPhone 11, the A13 Bionic. This chip gives it much more computing power than it is entitled to, allowing it to outperform many smartphones sold for twice as much.

The iPhone SE also packs in a great 12MP primary lens. It lacks the ultra-wide and telephoto lenses of the iPhone 12 series, but the primary lens still takes excellent photos in a wide variety of conditions. Thanks to the use of the A13 chip, as well as the use of optical image stabilization and Smart HDR, the camera really rivals the main wide lenses you’ll find on the iPhone 12, with realistic and well-balanced photos.

Some people may also like the fact that in a world of gargantuan flagship phones, the iPhone SE is comfortably compact. However, one of the downsides is that its 4.7-inch display doesn’t look particularly impressive, although this is mainly due to the fact that it’s based on an LCD rather than OLED like the lineup. iPhone 12. At just 1,821 mAh, its battery isn’t particularly long, either, although that’s good if you’re not a heavy user.

iPhone 11

iPhone 11
Julian Chokkattu / Digital trends

Released in 2019, the iPhone 11 came a generation before the iPhone 12. Being not even two years old (yet), it’s still a great device and is still being sold by Apple. Its main features include the A13 Bionic chip (as seen with the iPhone SE, above), a dual-lens rear camera, excellent battery life, and an affordable starting price of $ 599.

Basically, you can think of the iPhone 11 as a less advanced iPhone 12. Like the iPhone 12, it offers a 12 MP primary rear camera lens and a 12 MP ultra-wide lens, although it lacks some of the subtle refinements of both. lenses housed by the iPhone 12. It also has a 6.1-inch display, although it is an LCD display, so not as striking as the OLED equivalent of the iPhone 12. D On the other hand, it comes with a bigger 3,110mAh battery, which offers just a bit more run time than the 2,815mAh cell in the iPhone 12.

Of course, it should also be mentioned that unlike the iPhone 12, the iPhone 11 does not support 5G. Its design is arguably a little more attractive, however, with its curved sides preferred by some to the flat, angular sides of the iPhone 12.

iPhone XR

iphone xr home screen
Julian Chokkattu / Digital trends

The iPhone XR is the oldest iPhone on this list, released in 2018. But it’s still worth a look. It runs an A12 Bionic processor, which even today has no problem running just about all the latest video games. As with the iPhone SE (2020), it only has a single-lens rear camera, but this 12MP lens will mainly take great photos in most environments. At 2,942 mAh, its battery will also comfortably last you a full day of fairly intensive use.

Put simply, the iPhone XR ticks a lot of the boxes associated with newer models: it looks great, performs even better, and has fantastic software. It’s a very reliable device, and while its 6.1-inch LCD display isn’t as striking as the iPhone 12’s, it’s still quite nice (especially if you’re upgrading from it). ‘older phone). When you add in the very reasonable asking price of $ 499, it almost looks like a bargain.

The most recent iPhone is iPhone 12, along with iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. They are fantastic smartphones, offering top notch performance, and last you for years to come (assuming you’re not a compulsive upgrader). However, these aren’t the only iPhones currently sold by Apple, with the manufacturer’s website selling three other recent models: the iPhone SE (2020), iPhone 11, and iPhone XR. They’re also great phones and come highly recommended, especially if you don’t want to pay the premium price.

Of course, it won’t be long before Apple announces the next generation iPhone, putting at least some of the above models at risk of obsolescence. So keep checking this space if you want to keep up to date with the latest iPhone models.
